GC2400 Product Family (Gas Chromatograph w/ Autosampler + Mass Spectrometer + Headspace)

In 2022, we launched the GC2400 platform for gas chromatography. From concept to production, I was responsible for driving the design language, designing the instrument covers and touch points, and overseeing the user experience.
RESEARCH
IDEATION
From the beginning, we wanted a design that would convey simplicity to the end user. Straying from past curvy and complex cover sets, we dictated a very simple form with flat surfaces, angular accents, and large radii.
PROTOTYPING
[AESTHETICS, FUNCTION, ERGONOMICS]
I built a full scale mockup of the concept out of foam board, paper, acrylic, and 3D printed parts. This was instrumental in testing functionality, aesthetics, and ergonomics early on.
CAD MODELING
I designed the master models in Solidworks including draft and aesthetic features. I actively engaged with engineers and molders to maintain design intent and ensure high quality outcomes.
DETAILS
With minimalism in mind, every detail (decals and markings, safety symbols, touchpoints, split lines, hole patterns, etc.) was crafted meticulously to create an approachable, easy to use instrument.
RENDERING
I learned how to use Keyshot and completed almost 50 renderings for marketing use. This entailed setting up the scene, cameras, studios, applying materials, and post processing in Photoshop.
SONIC BRANDING
In benchmarking competitors and looking at consumer product trends, I discovered an untapped feature that would help reinforce our brand everytime the user turns on the instrument. I spearheaded the development of PerkinElmer's first ever sonic brand. The instruments play a welcoming jingle upon startup. This sonic logo is now implemented on customer facing demonstration and marketing videos.
LED SCHEME
I worked side by side with scientists and firmware engineers to define a comprehensive yet simplified LED scheme. For each state we assigned a color and an action/or non-action. In this way, we were able to create visual hierarchy which could inform the user at a high level or in-depth level depending on their needs. By creating LED zones, we were able to show the user where an issue was located allowing them to more quickly resolve errors and reduce down time without having to consult a manual.
TABLET HOLDER
I worked closely with our mechanical engineer to develop a custom mounting method, allowing the user to easily install/uninstall the tablet for ultimate portability. Easier said than done, this required multiple rounds of iterations, user testing, and heat testing to ensure optimum performance.
CMF QUALITY VALIDATION
I was responsible for specifying, validating, and tracking CMF for all cosmetic parts in a variety of mfg processes including injection molding, powdercoating, urethane paint, silk screening, laser marking, and clear coating. I worked directly with vendors to ensure compliance with PerkinElmer standards.
OTHER PROJECTS...
*** I am currently leading industrial design development on other projects which are confidential and unfortunately cannot be shared here***
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
I assisted in creating a library and documentation of materials, mfg processes, marking methods, etc. I helped create and update our internal Industrial Design Sharepoint site. I helped streamline our engineering change process by reducing complexity in artwork revision control. I also worked with another designer to create an official ID process as both an internal and external guide. In addition, I took the initiative to create an infographic of our design process that we can use as a quick reference when working with other departments.
